The Argument:
Important to grab the readers attention:
- Open with a quotation that is relevant to the topic.
- Provide a surprising fact and bring to their attention the topic being discussed. Being informative!
- Humour / joke only if it appropriate, check sensitivity.
The Argument:
- Need to write a balanced argument.
- Consider the positives and the negatives of the issue.
- The body of the text needs to present the pros and cons, the for and against arguments, relating to the central issue.
- Don't present your own bias or even your own point of view.
- Rather laying out both sides of the argument for the reader and reflect equal weight for each point of view.
- Here are some suggestions on how to structure your paragraphs.
- P = Point (Make your point at the beginning of the paragraph.
- E = Evidence (Provide evidence that underpins this point
- E = Explain (Explore point further and tie back to the central issue.
- Review the information
- Provide a summary of the arguments, and weigh up the issue in light of available evidence.
- Only at this point you can offer your own opinion, only if appropriate.
- An excellent way to finish is to end with a question, a challenge to the readers to form their own opinion.
